Custom Stone Tabletops in Phoenix: Choose the Stone, Then the Table
Stop shopping for an ordinary table. Discover a different way to create a dining table, coffee table, or statement piece using individually selected stone.
By Lion Marble & Stone, Phoenix, Arizona
Studio illustrationYou find a table with the right shape, but the wrong finish. Another has a beautiful top, but the base doesn’t suit your room. The one you finally like looks exactly like something you’ve seen in several other furniture stores.
There is another way.
Instead of choosing a finished table and accepting every design decision someone else has made, start with the surface itself: the tabletop.
Imagine a marble surface with delicate mineral veins. A black-and-gold granite top with dramatic natural movement. A green-and-honey onyx surface that becomes the focal point of a room. Or a distinctive piece of petrified wood that you won’t find in an ordinary furniture showroom.
Then choose the base, height, proportions and overall design that bring it all together.
At Lion Marble & Stone in Phoenix, Arizona, we fabricate individual stone tabletops in our own shop. Our collection includes marble, granite, quartzite, engineered quartz, travertine, onyx, Taj Mahal stone and petrified wood.
Each piece has its own appearance, dimensions and character.
The question isn’t simply, “Which table matches my room?”
It’s “Which stone would make this room feel like mine?”
A Different Kind of Statement Piece
A statement table doesn’t have to be enormous. Sometimes a smaller piece of stone with the right pattern can completely change the feel of a room.
Consider two marble tabletops in our collection, both measuring 32″ × 26″.
One features delicate mineral markings and a relatively quiet appearance. The other has cloudy gray areas and more noticeable taupe-gray bands.
The dimensions are identical. The appearance is not.
Either could become an interesting coffee or accent table with an appropriately designed base.
This is one of the advantages of selecting an individual stone tabletop rather than purchasing a mass-produced furniture set. You can see the actual material and choose the pattern that appeals to you.
Make the Stone the Center of the Design
Some tabletops are subtle. Others naturally attract attention.
Our collection includes several distinctive surfaces:
- Black-and-gold granite: A dramatic combination of dark mineral bands, gold accents and natural crystalline movement. An interesting option for a dining or conference table.See the 100″ × 36″ black-and-gold granite
- Green-and-honey onyx: A striking blend of green, olive, honey and amber tones that brings a distinctive natural pattern into a room.See the 97″ × 48″ green-and-honey onyx
- White marble: A lighter appearance with natural gray veining, suitable for customers who prefer a more understated design.See the 62″ × 35″ white marble
- Petrified wood: A distinctive material with natural grain-like patterns, mineral coloring and character unlike conventional stone surfaces.See the 82″ × 37.5″ petrified wood
We also offer quartzite, travertine, Taj Mahal stone and engineered quartz tabletops.
The right choice depends on the atmosphere you want to create. A strongly patterned stone can become the centerpiece of a room, while a quieter surface can complement existing furniture, flooring and finishes.
Marble, Granite, Quartzite or Quartz? Choose for Everyday Living, Too.
Appearance is important, but understanding the material before purchasing is equally important.
Marble: Natural Character and Timeless Appeal
Marble offers distinctive natural movement, ranging from subtle gray veins to dramatic mineral patterns.
It is particularly attractive for coffee tables, accent tables and dining surfaces where the natural appearance of the stone is part of the design.
However, marble is sensitive to acids. Lemon juice, wine and vinegar can etch the surface, leaving a dull area rather than simply causing a stain.
A penetrating sealer can improve stain resistance, but it does not prevent acid etching.
Marble is a rewarding choice for someone who appreciates natural stone and understands its care requirements.
Granite: Distinctive Patterns and Practicality
Granite offers an extensive range of natural colors, mineral formations and patterns.
From subtle speckled surfaces to dramatic black-and-gold designs, granite can work in many different furniture styles.
Many granite varieties are well suited to everyday use, although care requirements depend on the particular stone, its finish and its condition.
Ask about the individual tabletop’s sealing requirements and recommended cleaning products.
Quartzite: Natural Stone with Its Own Character
Quartzite is a natural stone, not another name for engineered quartz.
It is known for its hardness and can offer beautiful patterns, including light backgrounds, dramatic veins and distinctive mineral movement.
However, quartzite varieties differ in porosity and sealing requirements. The specific material should be assessed rather than assuming every quartzite behaves the same way.
Engineered Quartz: Consistent Appearance and Easy Care
Engineered quartz is manufactured using mineral content, binders and pigments.
It offers a different appearance from natural stone, often with more controlled patterns and a consistent finish.
It generally requires less maintenance than many natural stones and does not normally require sealing.
However, it is not indestructible. Excessive heat, harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning products can damage certain quartz surfaces.
Use trivets and follow the manufacturer’s care recommendations for the specific product.
Onyx: A Distinctive Natural Statement
Onyx offers striking mineral bands and color transitions that can make an individual tabletop particularly eye-catching.
Our green-and-honey onyx piece, for example, combines shades of green, honey, cream and amber.
Onyx requires more careful handling than many other stone options. It can scratch and etch from acidic substances, so its intended application and maintenance requirements should be considered before purchasing.
Travertine: Warmth and Natural Texture
Travertine is recognized for its earthy colors, natural pores and layered mineral appearance.
Its warm beige, tan and cream tones can complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Because travertine is a calcareous stone, acidic spills can etch its surface. Appropriate cleaning and care are important.
Petrified Wood: A Tabletop with Individual Character
Petrified wood is particularly interesting because its natural mineral patterns preserve the appearance of wood grain in a stone material.
Color variations, mineral formations and natural markings make each piece visually distinctive.
For someone looking for something beyond conventional marble or granite furniture, a petrified wood tabletop can be an extraordinary starting point.
The Base Is Part of the Design—and Part of the Structure
A stone tabletop cannot simply be placed on any base that happens to fit underneath it.
The base must be suitable for the tabletop’s weight, dimensions, thickness and intended use.
Stability, attachment, support, overhang and knee clearance all matter.
This becomes particularly important with longer surfaces, such as a 90″ × 36″ quartz tabletop or a substantial natural stone dining surface.
You may already have a metal or wood base that you would like to use. That may be possible, but its compatibility should be assessed before purchasing the stone.
At Lion Marble & Stone, most listings are for tabletops only. Base inclusion varies by individual piece, and custom bases can be discussed separately.
The goal is to create a table that looks right and is properly supported for its intended use.
Choose the Right Size for Your Space
A tabletop can fit inside a room and still be the wrong size for the way you intend to use it.
Before choosing a piece, consider:
- Can people pull their chairs out comfortably?
- Is there sufficient room to walk around the table?
- Will chair arms fit beneath the finished table?
- Will the base interfere with legroom?
- Is the table intended for dining, working, entertaining or occasional use?
One useful exercise is to mark the proposed tabletop dimensions on your floor using painter’s tape. Position your chairs around the marked area and walk through the space.
Also remember that seating capacity depends on the base, chair dimensions and available clearance—not just the length of the stone.
If you are unsure about sizing, bring your measurements and intended use when discussing a tabletop with us.
See the Actual Stone Before You Decide
Natural stone is not manufactured with identical patterns. Every individual piece has its own mineral movement, markings and color variations.
That is why seeing the actual tabletop matters.
Look at the complete surface, not just a small sample. Notice where the strongest patterns appear and consider how the stone will look in your room.
Ask to see current photographs of the actual piece, including the edge, thickness and finish. Studio illustrations can help visualize the overall design, but the actual stone should guide your final decision.
At Lion Marble & Stone, our collection features individually fabricated tabletops. We encourage customers to ask questions about the particular piece they are considering before making a purchase.
